For landlords, agents and businesses

Duty holders for workplaces and the shared parts of flats in Jevington must manage asbestos under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. In practice: find it, assess it, record it and manage it.

Landlords of single homes don’t have the same duty to manage as non-domestic duty holders, but contractors still need to know about asbestos before they work.

Artex removal near Jevington

If your renovation in Jevington involves textured ceilings, test them before rewiring, fitting downlights or plastering. Typical jobs include coatings already disturbed and ceilings coming down, involving coated ceiling roses, coated plasterboard and swirl patterns.

In areas like Jevington, textured ceilings appear in older and newer homes. We only recommend work that is needed.

Common reasons for Artex jobs in Jevington

Older coatings are often painted over many times, so age is hard to judge.

These are some of the things we deal with in Jevington:

  • Coatings in the way of electrical work
  • Coatings already disturbed
  • Loft conversions and extensions
  • Landlord refurbishments

Older homes across Jevington may have coatings added during past renovations.

Patched areas

Patches may be newer material.

Painted coatings

Paint often hides the coating, which doesn’t change what’s underneath.

How it works

For board removal, we take the boards down in whole pieces. Before we leave, we explain what we did and what comes next.

  1. Let us know which rooms have textured coatings
  2. We sample each different coating for testing
  3. If asbestos is found, we explain the options and quote
  4. We seal off each room and remove the coating wet, or take the boards down whole
  5. The room is cleaned and the waste goes to a permitted site with paperwork

Before we arrive

  • Keep away from the material in the meantime
  • Clear access to the area, loft or garage
  • Dig out previous surveys

Jevington questions

Do you cover Jevington and the area around Polegate station?

Yes, we cover Jevington and the area towards Polegate station, about 2.3 miles north-east.

Could my house in Jevington contain asbestos?

It depends on its age and history: asbestos products were used until 1999, so pre-2000 homes and extensions in Jevington may have it. Look at garage roofs, textured ceilings, old floor tiles, soffits and flues.

Do you need a licence to remove Artex?

Normally not: HSE’s code of practice says textured coating work is not normally licensable, though large steam or gel jobs are notifiable.

Is damaged asbestos an emergency?

Make the area safe first: shut the door if you can and don’t sweep it up. Then get in touch and we will advise.

I think I’ve damaged asbestos. What now?

Leave the area, keep others out and close the door if you can. Don’t try to clean up the debris yourself, and ask for advice; your GP can advise if you’re worried about your health.

Which asbestos work needs a licence?

Higher-risk materials need an HSE-licensed contractor. Most asbestos cement and textured coatings are non-licensed or notifiable non-licensed.

When can you start?

We agree a date when you accept the quote. Some work has to be notified to the enforcing authority first, which affects timing.

Do you cover Jevington?

Yes, we do: our area includes Jevington and the places around it. Send the postcode and a few photos and we’ll quote.

What we do and don’t cover

It’s worth knowing what Artex removal does and does not cover:

  • Big jobs need notifying in advance, which affects the start date
  • We test before removal, since a negative result changes everything
  • The room being worked on has to be empty and sealed off

Not sure what you need? Send us photos and we will tell you honestly.

Materials we see

  • Coated plasterboard
  • Textured walls
  • Ceiling roses and cornices (coated)
  • Swirl and stipple patterns
  • Patched or painted coatings
  • Artex ceilings

More about this service

Can I do it myself?

Asbestos waste cannot go in household bins, recycling or skips. It has to go to a site that accepts it, and some councils accept small amounts from residents by arrangement.

Working on a fragile asbestos cement roof is dangerous in itself, as well as an asbestos risk, so stay off it.

Afterwards

The ceiling or wall is left ready for your plasterer.

To avoid problems in future:

  • Line up the plasterer for afterwards
  • Plan around the closed rooms
  • Photos help us quote
  • Clear the rooms before the work

Don’ts

Don’t try DIY removal products on untested coatings.

Test before the builders arrive.

Weighing up your options

Remove the coating, or the whole ceiling? Stripping keeps the ceiling; taking boards down whole can be quicker and cleaner in some rooms. How easy the material is to reach affects the price, so tell us about access.

Why choose us
