More about this service

Asbestos garage roof removal near Enfield Highway

Asbestos cement roofs are fragile: they can give way underfoot. We work from ladders, stepladders, towers or crawling boards as the roof needs. We often deal with ridge pieces, cement gutters and cement wall panels, and people usually contact us about carport roofs and prefab garages with cement walls.

In Enfield Highway, garages are often reached through the garden or along a lane, so we plan how to carry the sheets out. We only recommend work that is needed.

Where asbestos turns up

Corrugated asbestos cement was widely used for garage roofs until asbestos was banned in 1999, so many garages across Greater London still have them.

Get advice if you are dealing with any of these:

  • Storm-damaged sheets
  • Concrete-panel garages
  • Roofs to clear before demolition
  • Old, cracked sheets

If you are a landlord with garages near Brimsdown station, it’s worth knowing what the roof is before anyone works on it.

How to choose an asbestos contractor

For landlords, agents and businesses

Schools, halls and community buildings are non-domestic premises, so the duty to manage applies.

Contractors working for you need asbestos information before they start. HSE’s campaigns stress this point to building owners and trades alike.

FAQs for Enfield Highway

Do you work in Enfield Highway despite London parking restrictions?

We do. Tell us about parking, permits and access so we can plan; all of Greater London is inside the ULEZ.

My garage in Enfield Highway has a grey corrugated roof. Is it asbestos?

Many garages built before 2000 have asbestos cement roofs, but not all. A sample test will tell you.

My builder has found asbestos. What now?

Work there should pause and the area be kept clear. We can test the material and, if needed, plan its removal.

Will I get the price in writing?

Yes, always, including whether VAT is included.

I think I’ve damaged asbestos. What now?

Leave the area, keep others out and close the door if you can. Avoid sweeping, vacuuming or dusting, then contact a professional; your GP can advise if you’re worried about your health.

Which asbestos work needs a licence?

Higher-risk materials need an HSE-licensed contractor. Most asbestos cement and textured coatings are non-licensed or notifiable non-licensed.

Is a home built after 2000 likely to contain asbestos?

Homes built after 2000 shouldn’t contain asbestos, as it was banned in 1999, though older parts, reused materials or earlier outbuildings can.

What happens to the old roof sheets?

They’re wrapped, labelled and taken to a permitted site by a registered waste carrier, with paperwork for your records.

What it might be made of

Roof felt

Some garages have felt under or over the sheets, which is sometimes tested too.

Ridge pieces

Ridge cappings are typically asbestos cement too.

Which option is right?

Remove it or leave it? A sound roof with no work planned can be left and monitored; a cracked, leaking roof or a garage conversion means removal. We don’t publish a price list, because jobs vary so much. Our guides list published price ranges from other companies, with sources.

What you get

  • Domestic and commercial work
  • Reports and results you can share
  • Samples analysed by an accredited laboratory
  • Jobs planned to HSE guidance

See how we quote and published price ranges.

Doing it yourself?

Working on a fragile asbestos cement roof is dangerous in itself, quite apart from the asbestos, so never climb onto one.

HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.

  • Nothing removed blind: unknown materials are tested first
  • Work planned to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and HSE guidance
  • Paperwork for your records: reports, lab results and consignment notes
  • Waste sealed and labelled, then taken to a permitted site
