Should you do it yourself?

Working on a fragile asbestos cement roof is dangerous in itself, as well as an asbestos risk, so never climb onto one.

If you do find something during DIY, stop: keep people away, do not sweep or vacuum it up, and get advice.

What happens

Samples are bagged, labelled and logged against their location, before going to an accredited laboratory. Before anything starts, we confirm the areas and materials with you, so there is no confusion.

  1. Let us know the address and why you need a survey
  2. We confirm the survey type and which rooms and outbuildings it covers
  3. Our surveyor carries out the inspection and sampling
  4. Each sample is analysed by an accredited laboratory
  5. The written report arrives with the results, condition ratings and next steps

Getting ready

  • Let us know if something’s broken

Surveying buildings in Ascot

Ascot is about 4 miles east of Bracknell, in Windsor and Maidenhead. We work across Ascot and the surrounding area, from older terraces and semis to flats, workplaces and outbuildings. We work in all 57 towns and villages in Windsor and Maidenhead. Our nearest city page is Guildford, about 12 miles away.

Non-domestic buildings, South Ascot Village Primary School among them, come under the duty to manage asbestos, and a management survey is normally where that starts. If you are a landlord near Ascot station, asbestos information should be ready for contractors before maintenance.

Here we cover the SL5 postcode area, and your survey can be anywhere in it. Streets in the area include London Road, High Street and St George's Lane, and an asbestos survey is available on all of them. Close by, we cover Sunninghill (1 mile south-east), Cheapside (1 mile north-east), North Ascot (1 mile north-west), Brookside (1 mile north-west) and Beggar's Bush (1 mile east). Further out, we also cover Maidenhead (8 miles north), Windsor (5 miles north), Boyn Hill (8 miles north-west), Cookham (11 miles north), Furze Platt (9 miles north) and Dedworth (5 miles north).

Ascot questions

Do older homes in Ascot have asbestos?

That depends on when it was built and altered: asbestos was used until the 1999 ban, so older homes and older alterations in Ascot can contain it. Look at garage roofs, textured ceilings, old floor tiles, soffits and flues.

Do you survey schools and community buildings around Ascot?

Yes, by arrangement with the duty holder. Non-domestic buildings should have an asbestos register and management plan.

What if asbestos is found during building work?

Stop work in that area and keep people out, then have the material identified before anything else happens.

Do landlords need an asbestos survey?

Duty holders for workplaces and common parts typically need one. Many landlords of private homes find one useful before maintenance.

Do you work in flats?

Yes, of course. For the shared areas of a block, the managing agent or freeholder holds the asbestos information.

When can you start?

It depends on the job and our diary. We will give you dates when we quote.

Should all asbestos be removed?

Not necessarily. If it’s in good condition and nobody will disturb it, leaving it in place and checking it can be the safer choice.

Do you survey commercial buildings in Ascot?

Yes, commercial and community buildings as well as homes. Tell us the size and use of the building.

After the job

Material in good condition often does not need removing. The report tells you what to keep an eye on.

A few practical points:

  • Survey first, then book the trades
  • Keep children and pets away from the areas being surveyed
  • In a block of flats, ask for the register of the shared areas
  • Ensure you can pass the report to your builder

Things not to do

If a material is damaged before the survey, keep people away from it and tell us.

Plan the survey early, before booking builders, so the results can shape your plans and your budget.

Responsibilities for owners

Void periods are a good time for asbestos work, when rooms are empty and work can be done without disruption.

Landlords of garage blocks and outbuildings should know what the roofs are made of, before repairs are arranged.

Where asbestos turns up

Asbestos was used in British buildings for much of the 20th century, until it was fully banned in 1999. So buildings across Windsor and Maidenhead can contain it in roofs, soffits, ceilings, floors and boiler cupboards.

These come up again and again:

  • Schools, halls and community buildings
  • Managing asbestos in workplaces and non-domestic premises
  • Surveys requested by builders before work
  • Purchases of older homes and buildings

Planning work on an older building in Ascot, whether near Church of All Souls or elsewhere? A refurbishment and demolition survey of the areas affected should come first.

What your quote should include

  • That the survey follows HSE’s guide HSG264
  • That samples are analysed by an accredited laboratory
  • Whether they’re insured for asbestos work
  • Which areas and materials are covered

What to check before booking

Prices and what affects them

Quotes vary because of:

  • The number of materials to sample
  • The size of the job
  • What the material is and its state
  • Roof spaces and outbuildings in scope

We do not publish a price list, because jobs vary so much. Our cost guides show published ranges, with dates and sources.

Helping us quote

Photos often save us a visit:

  • Labels, if any
  • A rough size or measurement
  • Any damage, cracks or broken pieces
  • A picture of the whole area

For an accurate quote, tell us what you’ve found, where it is and what you’re planning. Call 07833 053 749 or use our quote form.

What it might be made of

Roofing felt and bitumen

Felt on flat roofs and outbuildings is sampled where it’s in scope.

Pipe lagging

Lagging on older pipes and boilers can contain asbestos and releases fibres easily. Work on it is licensed.

Good to know

Some limits to bear in mind:

  • A survey reflects the building on the day; condition can change, so recheck it
  • A survey identifies asbestos; it doesn’t remove it, though we can quote for that too
  • A management survey is only minimally intrusive, so it isn’t enough before refurbishment

Not sure what you need? Send us photos and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.
