Asbestos survey in Birchett's Green
What happens next
Share the report with builders and trades before they start, so nobody disturbs asbestos by accident.
After the job, keep these in mind:
- Keep children and pets away from the areas being surveyed
- Let us know about locked rooms or unsafe areas
- Ask for the report in a format you can share with contractors
- Tell us exactly what work you’re planning, so the survey covers the right areas
What to avoid
Please don’t break off pieces for us to look at: sampling is part of the survey, done with controls to keep dust down.
Book the survey before the builders, so there’s time to deal with anything it finds.
Asbestos survey near Birchett's Green
There are two main types of survey, set out in HSE’s guide HSG264. A management survey is for a building in normal use; a refurbishment and demolition survey is for before building work. We’ll tell you which suits your plans in Birchett's Green. Whether it’s purchases of older homes and buildings and shared halls, stairs and plant rooms, we deal with floor tiles, flues and garage roofs and more.
Rural homes near Birchett's Green have often been extended over generations, so a refurbishment survey before work checks every part being touched. Not sure what you need? Just ask: we will tell you honestly whether it’s a test, a survey or removal.

A closer look at the materials
Roofing felt and bitumen
Bitumen felts and mastics can contain asbestos, usually well bound in.
Asbestos cement
Asbestos cement was used for garage and shed roofs, gutters, downpipes, flues, soffits and water tanks. The fibres are bound in cement, and breaking or cutting it releases them.
What we do and don’t cover
It’s worth knowing what an asbestos survey does and doesn’t cover:
- Inaccessible areas are recorded, and must be treated as containing asbestos until checked
- The survey tells you what’s there; removal is a separate job, though we can quote for that too
- A management survey is only minimally intrusive, so it isn’t enough before refurbishment
If in doubt, ask: we’ll recommend a test, a survey or removal before you book.

Your questions about an asbestos survey in Birchett's Green
Can you deal with asbestos on rural buildings in the High Weald National Landscape?
Yes, the same rules apply there, but access to farm and rural buildings can take planning.
Do you work near Stonegate station?
Yes. Stonegate station is about 2.6 miles south of Birchett's Green, and we cover both.
What should I do if I’ve disturbed asbestos?
Leave the area, keep others out and close the door if you can. Avoid sweeping, vacuuming or dusting, then contact a professional; your GP can advise if you are worried about your health.
Is a survey needed before building work in Birchett's Green?
Yes, for the areas being worked on: HSE’s guidance calls for a refurbishment and demolition survey before the work starts.
What if my house is newer?
Asbestos was banned in 1999, so buildings built after 2000 shouldn’t contain it, although older materials can sometimes be reused or left in extensions.
Can you advise before I buy a property?
Of course. A pre-purchase survey, arranged with the seller’s permission, shows what asbestos is there before you exchange.
What’s the difference between a test and a survey?
A test checks specific materials; a survey checks a whole building or work area. For building work, a survey is generally needed.
Can you quote from photos?
Often we can quote from clear photos and a description; otherwise we will arrange a visit.

For rented homes close to Stonegate station, asbestos information should be ready for contractors before maintenance. What it costs
The price of an asbestos survey depends mainly on:
- Travel and parking
- What the material is and its state
- How big the building is
- Lofts, voids and outbuildings to include
We do not publish a price list, because jobs vary so much. Our cost guides show published ranges, with dates and sources.
Photos that help
Photos help us understand the job before we visit. Take them without disturbing anything:
- A wide shot showing where the material is
- Any damage, cracks or broken pieces
- The access route
- The parking area

DIY and asbestos
HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.
Sanding, drilling, cutting and jet-washing are the worst things you can do to asbestos materials, so avoid them completely.
Duty holders and landlords in Birchett's Green
Landlords of garage blocks and outbuildings should know what the roofs are made of, before anyone carries out repairs.
The duty to manage applies to non-domestic premises and common parts, not to single private homes, but anyone working on the property still needs to know about asbestos.
Weighing up your options
Some people skip the survey and hope for the best. If asbestos is then found mid-job, work stops, costs rise and people may have been exposed, which is why surveying first tends to save money. Identifying asbestos early is cheaper than stopping work later, when the whole project can be held up.
