Asbestos testing in Ewshot

About our asbestos testing in Ewshot

If you’ve already disturbed a material during DIY in Ewshot, stop and keep people away from it. Testing a sample tells you what you are dealing with. People often contact us about garage roofs before replacement and debris found after DIY, involving soffit boards, textured ceilings and garage roof sheets.

In a village like Ewshot, we test materials on barns, stables and outbuildings as well as homes, where cement sheet roofs and cladding were often used. We explain what we find in plain English, including when it’s better to leave a material in place.

Materials we deal with

Flues and tanks

Testing them before removal avoids surprises.

Boards and panels

Some boards are insulating board, which is higher risk. A test tells you which.

How we price asbestos testing

What drives the price:

  • Roof spaces and outbuildings in scope
  • What the material is and its state
  • The quantity or area
  • Access to the area

There is no one-size price, as every job differs. Our guides list published price ranges from other companies, with sources.

Sending photos

Photos help us understand the job before we visit. Take them from a safe distance without touching the material:

  • A rough size or measurement
  • How we’d reach it
  • Street parking nearby
  • A wide shot showing where the material is

Tell us about the material, its location and your plans. Use our quote form or call 07833 053 749.

Doing it yourself?

HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.

If you do find something during DIY, stop: leave the area, do not clean it up, and ask for advice.

Which option is right?

You can buy home testing kits, but you have to disturb the material yourself to use one. HSE advises that a competent person takes samples. Dealing with asbestos before building work is generally cheaper than finding it mid-job, when everything has to stop.

What you get

Where asbestos turns up

Building products contained asbestos until the 1999 ban, so materials in homes and buildings across Surrey built or refurbished before 2000 can contain it.

Get advice if you’re dealing with any of these:

  • Textured ceilings before a renovation
  • Debris found after DIY
  • Checks before maintenance in rented homes
  • Panels behind old heaters

Schools such as St Nicholas' School should have an asbestos management plan, and staff can ask to see how it works.

What your quote should include

  • The survey type, as defined in HSG264
  • The scope of the job, in writing
  • Suitable insurance for the work
  • Areas included and excluded

Ewshot questions

Do you cover small places like Ewshot?

Yes. We cover villages and hamlets as well as towns. Just tell us how to reach the property.

Could my house in Ewshot contain asbestos?

Older homes can, if they date from before 2000. A sample test is the only reliable answer. Common places include garage roofs, textured ceilings, floor tiles, soffits and flues.

Which asbestos work needs a licence?

Higher-risk materials need an HSE-licensed contractor. Cement and textured coatings usually are not licensed.

Can asbestos go in my bin?

Never: asbestos waste is hazardous and can’t go in skips, bins or recycling. It must go to a permitted site.

When can you start?

That depends on the work and current bookings. We will give you dates when we quote.

Can you test Artex in Ewshot?

Yes, we do: we take a small sample of the coating for the lab. Older textured coatings can contain a small amount of asbestos.

Do you give written quotes?

Yes, every quote is in writing and says what’s included, including whether VAT is included.

How do I know if my property contains asbestos?

Any building built or refurbished before 2000 can contain asbestos. Testing a sample is the only way to know.

Duty holders and landlords in Ewshot

If you are responsible for a non-domestic building or the common parts of flats in Ewshot, you have a duty to manage asbestos under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. That means finding it, assessing it, recording it and planning how to manage it.

Landlords of garage blocks and outbuildings should find out whether the roofs are asbestos cement, before repairs are arranged.

The process

Each sample is small, sealed in a bag, labelled and logged, then sent to an accredited laboratory. Unexpected finds are discussed with you first before carrying on.

  1. Tell us what you’d like tested
  2. We confirm the number of samples and the price
  3. We visit, take the samples and seal each point
  4. The samples are logged and sent to an accredited laboratory
  5. You get the results, and we talk you through them
