Choosing the right option

One sample or several? Different materials, and sometimes the same material in different places, need separate samples. We do not publish a price list, because jobs vary so much. Our guides list published price ranges from other companies, with sources.

What you get

  • Plain-English advice, including when to leave things alone
  • Clear notes on any areas not reached
  • Accredited laboratory results
  • Management, refurbishment and demolition, and pre-purchase surveys

Asbestos testing in Slough

We take each sample with controls to keep dust down: the material is damped, a small piece removed, sealed in a bag and the sample point sealed. That is safer than breaking off a piece yourself. We often deal with panels behind heaters, flue pipes and textured ceilings, and people generally contact us about old floor tiles before a new floor goes down and soffit boards.

Builders and landlords in areas like Slough often ask for a quick test before small jobs. Paperwork is part of every job, which is useful when you sell, let or build.

What happens

On the day, we confirm which materials to sample and where, then sample each material with controls to limit dust. While we work, the area stays out of bounds, so arrange for pets and children to be elsewhere.

  1. Get in touch with photos
  2. We confirm a test is the right choice, rather than a survey
  3. Our surveyor takes the samples
  4. The samples go to an accredited laboratory
  5. We explain what the result means for your plans

Getting ready

Common reasons for tests in Slough

HSE advises that samples are best taken by a competent person, because taking a sample disturbs the material.

You can’t tell by looking, but these are common reasons people contact us:

  • Soffit boards
  • Answers trades need before starting
  • Panels behind old heaters
  • Garage roofs before replacement

If you work at a school like Herschel Grammar School, ask the duty holder about the asbestos register.

How we price asbestos testing

Our quotes take into account:

  • Access to the area

  • The number of materials to sample

Our quotes are clear about VAT.

Sending photos

To help us quote quickly, send:

  • The route in: gates, steps, stairs or the loft hatch

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos and the postcode: just send photos through our quote form, or phone 07833 053 749.

Should you do it yourself?

Working on a fragile asbestos cement roof is dangerous in itself, as well as an asbestos risk, so never climb onto one.

Home testing kits exist, but you have to disturb the material to use one. HSE advises that samples are best taken by a competent person.

Slough questions

Do you work near Slough station?

Yes, we cover Slough and the area towards Slough station, about 0.7 miles east.

Do older homes in Slough have asbestos?

That depends on when it was built and altered: asbestos was used until the 1999 ban, so older homes and older alterations in Slough can contain it. Garage roofs, Artex, floor tiles, soffits and flues are typical examples.

My sample contains asbestos. What now?

A positive result tells you the type of asbestos found. Then the options depend on the material, its condition and your plans: leave it, cover it, or remove it.

Can you tell if it’s asbestos by looking?

Not reliably by eye: a sample has to be analysed in a laboratory. We take the sample safely and send it to an accredited lab.

Is asbestos dangerous?

It can be, if fibres are released and breathed in. Diseases linked to it, such as mesothelioma and asbestosis, can appear many years later, which is why it’s identified before work.

What’s the difference between a test and a survey?

A test checks specific materials; a survey checks a whole building or work area. For building work, a survey is usually needed.

Do I need to be at home?

We need access to every area in the job.

Can you quote from photos?

Often we can quote from clear photos and a description; if not, we’ll arrange to see it.

What happens next

You get a written laboratory result for each sample, stating whether asbestos was detected and what type.

Looking after any asbestos that remains:

  • Tell us what work you’re planning
  • Group several materials into one visit
  • Make the area easy to reach
  • If tiles and adhesive are both exposed, mention it

Don’ts

Until you have the result, don’t drill, sand, scrape or cut the material.

If a material is already damaged, keep people and pets away from it, and don’t sweep or vacuum up debris.

What we do and don’t cover

What’s in and what’s out:

  • If the material is in a hard-to-reach place, access may need planning
  • Identifying the material is the first step; removal is planned separately
  • We cannot confirm asbestos from a photo; only a lab can

If you are unsure, describe the job and send photos, and we’ll advise before you book.

Cement sheets

Grey corrugated sheets on garages and sheds are a common request. Testing confirms whether it’s asbestos cement.

  • Identify it first: we test or survey before planning removal
  • Work planned to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and HSE guidance
  • Written paperwork: reports, results and waste consignment notes
  • Waste sealed and labelled, then taken to a permitted site
