How asbestos testing works in The Pound

A test is a simple, definite way to find out. The result shows whether asbestos was found and, if so, which type, and we will explain your options. Whether it’s panels behind old heaters and garage and shed roofs before removal or repair, we deal with floor tiles, textured ceilings and flue pipes and more.

In a village like The Pound, we test materials on barns, stables and outbuildings as well as homes, where cement sheet roofs and cladding were often used. We identify materials before planning removal, as the right approach depends on the material.

FAQs for The Pound

Do you come out to small villages like The Pound?

We do: small villages are covered too. Just tell us how to reach the property.

How far is The Pound from London?

We cover The Pound, about 46 miles from central London.

Do you work on commercial premises?

Yes. Tell us the size and use of the building and what you need.

I think I’ve damaged asbestos. What now?

Get everyone out of the area and keep it closed. Avoid sweeping, vacuuming or dusting, then contact a professional.

Can I put asbestos in a skip?

No: asbestos waste is hazardous and cannot go in skips, bins or recycling. It has to go to a site that accepts it, with the right paperwork.

Can you come if the asbestos is damaged?

Keep people away from damaged material and do not clean it up yourself. Then contact us for advice.

Do I need a test or a survey?

Testing tells you about particular materials; a survey inspects the whole building or work area and records everything it finds.

Do you need to see it before quoting?

Clear photos and measurements are often enough; otherwise we will arrange a visit.

What we deal with in The Pound

Most exposure happens when someone disturbs a material without knowing it contains asbestos. A test beforehand prevents it.

These are the materials and situations that most often lead to tests:

  • Porch canopies
  • Results builders ask for before work
  • Artex ceilings before plastering, sanding or drilling
  • Boiler cupboard panels

For older homes anywhere in The Pound, from near Parish Church of St Peter outwards, get suspect materials tested before you start.

What your quote should include

  • Whether they’re insured for asbestos work
  • That the survey follows HSE’s guide HSG264
  • Which areas and materials are covered
  • If the price includes VAT

Read the checklist

After the job

We seal the sample point when sampling, so it’s safe while you wait.

If asbestos stays in the building:

  • If tiles and adhesive are both exposed, mention it
  • Clear access to the area
  • Tell us what work you’re planning
  • Photos of the material help us plan

Don’ts

Leave the material alone until the result is back.

Get the result before work is booked, so you can plan properly.

The process

The sample point is sealed, so it stays safe until the result arrives. We begin by confirming exactly what we are doing.

  1. Tell us what the material is, where it is, and send a photo if you can
  2. We agree how many samples are needed and send a quote
  3. Each sample is taken carefully and sealed
  4. An accredited laboratory carries out the analysis
  5. We send the result and explain your options

Getting ready

  • Find any old asbestos reports
  • Keep away from the material in the meantime
  • Mention any damage before we arrive

Helpful guides

Which option is right?

Testing before work generally costs less than dealing with asbestos found halfway through a job, when work has to stop and the area may need decontaminating. There is no one-size price, as every job differs. Our cost guides show published ranges, with dates and sources.

Why us?

  • Clear advice on your options
  • Homes, rented property and workplaces
  • London, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and beyond
  • Paperwork you can show your buyer, landlord or builder

Read how we quote or published price ranges.

Doing it yourself?

Fragile roofs are a serious falls risk, quite apart from the asbestos, so stay off it.

Sanding, drilling, cutting and jet-washing are the worst things you can do to asbestos materials, so avoid them completely.

What it might be made of

Cement sheets

Garage and shed roofs are often tested. A test confirms what the sheet is made of.

Floor tiles and adhesive

We test tiles and adhesive separately where needed, as one may contain asbestos when the other does not.

Good to know

The usual limits are:

  • A result tells you what the material is, not how to remove it
  • We can’t confirm asbestos from a picture
  • Testing doesn’t look for anything else, so it isn’t a substitute for a survey before major work

If you are unsure, describe the job and send photos, and we will advise before booking.

Materials we see
