Asbestos help in Willen

How we price asbestos testing

Quotes vary because of:

  • How much there is
  • How many different materials need sampling
  • What the material is and its state
  • Roof spaces and outbuildings in scope

Access makes a big difference to cost, so photos of the area and the way in help us quote accurately.

Helping us quote

When you send photos, these help most:

  • The access route
  • Approximate dimensions
  • Where we could park
  • Visible markings

Tell us about the material, its location and your plans. Use our quote form or call 07833 053 749.

How asbestos testing works in Willen

Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, anyone analysing samples to identify asbestos must be accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. Our samples go to an accredited lab, and you get the written result. People often contact us about debris found after DIY and porch canopies, involving garage roof sheets, black adhesive and floor tiles.

In towns and villages like Willen, outbuildings and farm buildings are common testing jobs, where cement sheet roofs and cladding were often used. We follow HSE guidance and the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

What it might be made of

Boards and panels

Boards in boiler cupboards, behind heaters or as soffits can be asbestos insulating board. Testing identifies them.

Cement sheets

Garage and shed roofs are often tested. Testing confirms whether it’s asbestos cement.

Limits to be aware of

Some limits to bear in mind:

  • If the material is in a hard-to-reach place, access may need planning
  • A test only covers the materials sampled, so it is not a substitute for a survey before major work
  • A result tells you what the material is, not how to remove it

If in doubt, ask: we’ll recommend a test, a survey or removal before booking.

Common materials

  • Bitumen adhesive
  • Flue pipes
  • Pipe lagging
  • Panels behind heaters
  • Roof felt
  • Artex and textured ceilings
  • Garage roof sheets
  • Floor tiles
  • Soffit boards
  • Water tanks

Should you do it yourself?

Working on a fragile asbestos cement roof is dangerous in itself, as well as an asbestos risk, so stay off it.

Sanding, drilling, cutting and jet-washing are the worst things you can do to asbestos materials, so avoid them completely.

Landlords, managing agents and employers

Community buildings count as non-domestic premises, so whoever runs them has a duty to manage asbestos.

If your business premises in Willen were built before 2000, you’re likely to need an asbestos register and a management plan, and contractors must be told what’s there.

Willen: your questions answered

Do older homes in Willen have asbestos?

Homes built or refitted before 2000 can. A sample test is the only reliable answer. Common places include garage roofs, textured ceilings, floor tiles, soffits and flues.

Do you cover small places like Willen?

We do: small villages are covered too. Tell us about access and parking.

How long do test results take?

Timing varies with the lab’s workload. You will get an estimate when we quote.

Do I need more than one sample?

Generally one for each different material, with extra where the same material appears in different places. Photos help us suggest a number.

Do you test textured ceilings?

Yes, we test textured coatings. Older coatings can contain a small amount of asbestos.

Can you help a business or landlord?

Yes: homeowners, landlords, managing agents, businesses and contractors. Tell us about the property and what you need.

Do you give written quotes?

Every time: you get the scope and price in writing.

Can I take a sample myself?

HSE’s advice is that a competent person should take samples, because the material has to be disturbed. We can do it for you.

Afterwards

File the results with your house paperwork, for future work or a sale.

After the job, keep these in mind:

  • Don’t touch it before we arrive
  • Not sure between a test and a survey? Ask
  • Group several materials into one visit
  • Make the area easy to reach

Things not to do

Test before you book the builders, so you can plan properly.

Please don’t take your own sample; tell us where it is and we’ll sample it safely.

  • Nothing removed blind: unknown materials are tested first
  • Done to the regulations: HSE guidance and CAR 2012
  • Written paperwork: reports, results and waste consignment notes
  • Waste sealed and labelled, then taken to a permitted site
