Asbestos garage roof removal in RM5: what to expect
Asbestos cement roofs are fragile: they won’t take a person’s weight. We work from ladders, stepladders, towers or crawling boards as the roof needs. Typical jobs include old, cracked sheets and storm-damaged sheets, involving bargeboards, ridge pieces and cement gutters.
We tape off the area and wet the sheets first, then release the fixings and lower each sheet whole.

Collier Row: If you are a landlord with garages near Romford station, it’s worth knowing what the roof is before anyone works on it. Properties near Bedfords Park may have outbuildings as well as a garage, which can be dealt with together. In December, it’s dark in Collier Row by about 3:50pm, so winter roof jobs start early and finish in daylight.

Doing it yourself?
HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.
Home testing kits exist, but you have to disturb the material to use one. HSE advises that samples are best taken by a competent person.
RM5 questions
How do I get a quote?
Send photos through our quote form, or phone 07833 053 749. Tell us the postcode, what the material is and where, and send photos if you can.
What if the weather’s bad?
Indoor jobs go ahead in any weather. Outdoor removal may be postponed in strong wind or heavy rain, for safety.
What if my house is newer?
Buildings from after 2000 shouldn’t, because of the 1999 ban, but older parts and reused materials can still contain it.
My builder has found asbestos. What now?
Work in that area should stop, and the material needs identifying before work resumes.
Should all asbestos be removed?
Not necessarily. If it’s in good condition and nobody will disturb it, leaving it in place and checking it can be the safer choice.
Do I need to be at home?
Someone has to let us into all the areas in the job, and it helps if you are around to answer questions.
How long does it take to remove a garage roof?
Size, access and condition decide, but most single garages are a short job once set up.
- Survey or test first when it isn’t clear what a material is
- Done to the regulations: HSE guidance and CAR 2012
- Paperwork for your records: reports, lab results and consignment notes
- Asbestos waste double-bagged or wrapped and taken to a permitted site
