Asbestos garage roof removal in SL4: what to expect

The sheets are unbolted and lowered, never broken or dropped, because breaking asbestos cement releases fibres. Typical materials include bargeboards, ridge pieces and corrugated roof sheets, and people usually contact us about garages before a new roof or conversion and pieces of broken roof.

Once the sheets are off, we clean the area and check for fragments, then take the waste away.

  1. Give us the size of the garage and the access
  2. We confirm the roof is asbestos cement, testing a sample if needed
  3. We quote and book a date around your roofer
  4. The sheets are damped, unfixed and lowered without breaking
  5. We take the wrapped sheets away and send the consignment note

What you’ll pay

SL4: garages, outbuildings and roofs

Garages across SL4, from Windsor, Chalvey and Dedworth to 16 villages and hamlets, often have corrugated cement roofs from before 2000. Town garages are often in blocks, village ones among outbuildings.

Windsor: Near open spaces such as Bray Pit, some larger plots have more than one outbuilding, so it can make sense to do them at once. If the garage opens onto a main road such as the A308 and A332, tell us about parking and access. In December, it’s dark in Windsor by about 3:55pm, so winter roof jobs start early and finish in daylight.

A closer look at the materials

Roof felt

Some garages have felt under or over the sheets, which is sometimes tested too.

Wall panels

These can be removed in the same way as the roof sheets.

Limits to be aware of

Worth knowing before booking:

  • Removal in strong wind is postponed for safety
  • If the roof turns out not to be asbestos cement, the method may change
  • We remove the asbestos roof; the new roof is normally a separate job

Afterwards

If you are converting the garage, tell your builder the roof has been removed and show them the paperwork.

  • Let us know where we can park
  • Book your roofer in advance
  • Keep children and pets indoors during the work
  • Measure or estimate the size of the roof

Don’t store anything on the roof or lean ladders against brittle sheets.

Never cut or break the sheets.

Where asbestos turns up

Leaks often come from cracked sheets, and patch repairs on brittle sheets rarely last.

Get advice if you’re dealing with any of these:

  • Brittle, leaking roofs
  • Carport roofs
  • Single garages
  • Garage conversions

Doing it yourself?

DIY sampling means disturbing the material yourself. HSE recommends a competent person takes samples.

HSE advises the public not to repair or remove asbestos themselves. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.

SL4 questions

Do you work in SL4?

We do: SL4 is within the area we cover in Windsor and Maidenhead. Share the postcode and a short description and we’ll quote.

Does someone need to be there?

We need access to every area in the job.

How do I get a quote?

Just use our quote form or call 07833 053 749. Include the postcode, a description and photos.

How quickly can you come out?

That depends on the work and current bookings. We’ll give you dates when we quote.

What’s the difference between a test and a survey?

A test checks specific materials; a survey checks a whole building or work area. For building work, a survey is typically needed.

Is garage roof removal licensed work?

Generally not: HSE treats removing asbestos cement sheets as non-licensed work, though it still needs controls and legal disposal.

Do you need to see it before quoting?

Often we can quote from clear photos and a description; if not, we will arrange to see it.

  • Identify it first: we test or survey before planning removal
  • Done to the regulations: HSE guidance and CAR 2012
  • Written paperwork: reports, results and waste consignment notes
  • Asbestos waste double-bagged or wrapped and taken to a permitted site
