How asbestos removal works in SP6
Much of the asbestos found in homes is asbestos cement, textured coating or floor tiles. HSE treats work on these as non-licensed or notifiable non-licensed in most cases, but it still needs the right controls. People often contact us about asbestos found during building work and outbuildings with cement roofs, involving flue pipes, cement roof sheets and floor tiles.
On the day, we set up the work area first: barrier tape, signs and protection where needed, and keep the material wet as we work.
- Tell us what needs removing and send photos
- If it hasn’t been identified, we sample it first
- We plan the job and send a written quote
- On the day we set up, keep the material damp and remove it whole where we can
- We clean up, dispose of the waste legally and send the consignment note
What you’ll pay
When comparing quotes, check what’s included: scope, method, waste disposal and paperwork.

Removing asbestos in SP6
Removal jobs across SP6 range from garage roofs in Fordingbridge, Alderholt and Ashford to barns and outbuildings in 28 villages and hamlets. Town jobs mean planning parking; rural jobs mean planning access.
Fordingbridge: For non-domestic buildings like Fordingbridge Junior School, removal is planned with the duty holder and timed for when the area is empty. In older buildings across Fordingbridge, asbestos may be in later additions, so we test before we plan. Late-December sunset in Fordingbridge is about 4:05pm, so we start outdoor work early in the day.
Responsibilities for owners
If you own a block of garages or outbuildings that you let should know what the roofs are made of, before repairs are arranged.
Void periods are a good time for asbestos work, while the property is empty.
Which option is right?
Removing asbestos before building work avoids stopping the job halfway, when everything has to wait for it to be dealt with.
What your quote should include
- If the price includes VAT
- What paperwork you get
- That licensed work will be done by an HSE-licensed contractor
- Whether they’re insured for asbestos work
What it might be made of
Floor tiles
Tiles come up whole where we can, with hand tools, never with sanders or grinders.
Water tanks and flues
Cement water tanks and flues are drained or disconnected first, then removed whole or in as few pieces as possible.
Can I do it myself?
DIY sampling means disturbing the material yourself. HSE recommends a competent person takes samples.
HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.
What we deal with in SP6
Damage from DIY, storms or accidents can make removal necessary, especially if broken material is lying around.
These come up again and again:
- Old floor tiles and black adhesive
- Old cold water tanks
- Sheds, outbuildings and lean-tos
- Artex before plastering
Questions from SP6
Do I need a test or a survey?
Testing tells you about particular materials; a survey inspects the whole building or work area and records everything it finds.
My builder has found asbestos. What now?
Stop work in that area and keep people out, then have the material identified before anything else happens.
Does all asbestos have to be removed?
In many cases it can stay: sound material that will not be disturbed can be left and managed. Record it and keep an eye on it.
What if my house is newer?
Buildings from after 2000 shouldn’t, because of the 1999 ban, although older materials can sometimes be reused or left in extensions.
Can you help with a shop or office?
Yes. Tell us the size and use of the building and what you need.
Do you give written quotes?
Yes, every quote is in writing and says what’s included.
How do I know if my property contains asbestos?
You can’t tell by eye. A sample analysed in a laboratory is the reliable way to find out, and anything from before 2000 is worth checking.
- Survey or test first when it isn’t clear what a material is
- Work planned to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and HSE guidance
- Written paperwork: reports, results and waste consignment notes
- Asbestos waste double-bagged or wrapped and taken to a permitted site
