Asbestos garage roof removal near Alderholt

Asbestos garage roof removal near Alderholt

Not sure it’s asbestos? We can test a sample. Pre-2000 grey sheeting often is, but only a test confirms it. People often contact us about broken sheets after high winds and single garages, involving cement wall panels, cement gutters and bargeboards.

Homes in towns and villages like Alderholt often have a garage plus sheds or lean-tos with similar roofs. Clear answers come first: is it asbestos, and what should you do about it.

Can I do it myself?

HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.

Sanding, drilling, cutting and jet-washing are the worst things you can do to asbestos materials.

How it works

We work from ladders, stepladders, towers or crawling boards, never standing on the sheets themselves. Parking close by makes the day easier. In December, it’s dark in Alderholt by about 4:05pm, so we start early on winter roof jobs.

Alderholt questions

Could my house in Alderholt contain asbestos?

Older homes can, if they date from before 2000. The only way to know is to test suspect materials. Look at garage roofs, textured ceilings, old floor tiles, soffits and flues.

Are garage roofs in Alderholt generally asbestos?

Older garages often do, but not all. Only a test can confirm it.

Can you come if the asbestos is damaged?

Keep people away from damaged material and do not clean it up yourself. Then contact us for advice.

What happens to the old roof sheets?

They’re wrapped, labelled and taken to a permitted site by a registered waste carrier, and you get the consignment note.

Can you advise before I buy a property?

Yes. A pre-purchase survey, arranged with the seller’s permission, shows what asbestos is there before you exchange.

Can the roof be overclad?

It’s possible on a sound roof, but preparation has its own risks. Don’t pressure-wash it first.

Which asbestos work needs a licence?

Licensed work is work on the materials most likely to release fibres: lagging, sprayed coatings and most asbestos insulating board. It needs a contractor with an HSE licence.

Do you need to see it before quoting?

Often we can quote from clear photos and a description; if not, we will arrange to see it.

What happens next

The wrapped sheets go to a permitted site, and you get the consignment note.

Keeping things safe:

  • Measure or estimate the size of the roof
  • File the waste paperwork
  • Tell neighbours if the garage is next to theirs
  • Keep children and pets indoors during the work

Avoid these

Do not climb onto or walk on an asbestos cement roof: it’s fragile and won’t take your weight.

If a sheet breaks in a storm, keep people away from the pieces and ask for advice.

What it might be made of

Gutters and downpipes

We take them down in whole lengths.

Roof felt

Some garages have felt under or over the sheets, which is sometimes tested too.

What we do and don’t cover

Before you book, note that:

  • Brick walls and slabs are a builder’s job
  • Different materials need a different approach
  • High winds can delay roof work

If in doubt, ask: we will recommend a test, a survey or removal before booking.

For landlords, agents and businesses

Before contractors start, they need to know about any asbestos. HSE’s campaigns stress this point to building owners and trades alike.

The duty to manage applies to non-domestic premises and common parts, not to single private homes, but contractors still need to know about asbestos before they work.

  • Nothing removed blind: unknown materials are tested first
  • Planned to HSE guidance and the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
  • Written paperwork: reports, results and waste consignment notes
  • Asbestos waste double-bagged or wrapped and taken to a permitted site
