What we deal with in North End

Refurbishment and demolition are the most common reasons for removal: anything the work would disturb should be dealt with first.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting advice:

  • Floor tiles before a new floor
  • Textured coatings
  • Loft water tanks
  • Asbestos garages

In older properties in North End, it’s often extensions and refits that contain asbestos, so materials are identified first.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the work is licensed, notifiable non-licensed or non-licensed
  • The documents you’ll receive
  • Laboratory analysis by an accredited lab
  • VAT, clearly stated

How to choose an asbestos contractor

How asbestos removal works in North End

Removal is planned, not improvised: we work out the method, the controls, the waste and whether the work must be notified. Whether it’s floor tiles before a new floor and cement flues and gutters, we deal with textured coatings, cement soffits and flue pipes and more.

In London neighbourhoods like North End, garages and outbuildings are often reached through the house or a rear lane, which affects how the waste is carried out. We explain what we find in plain English, including when it’s better to leave a material in place.

What affects the price in North End

The biggest factors in the price are:

  • Material and condition
  • How much there is
  • Travel and parking
  • Access: height, lofts, steps and space

Sometimes a test shows removal is not needed, if the material turns out not to contain asbestos.

Questions from North End

Do you cover North End and the area around Kensington Olympia station?

Yes, we cover North End and the area towards Kensington Olympia station, about 0.5 miles north.

Do you work in North End despite London parking restrictions?

Yes, we work across London. Let us know the parking situation and we will plan around it; all of Greater London is inside the ULEZ.

Do you test before removing asbestos in North End?

If it hasn’t been identified, yes. The right method depends on what the material is.

Is damaged asbestos an emergency?

First, keep everyone away and don’t clean it up. Then contact us for advice.

Will I get the price in writing?

Yes, always.

When can you start?

We agree a date when you accept the quote. Some work has to be notified to the enforcing authority first, which affects timing.

How dangerous is asbestos?

Asbestos is a hazard when its fibres get into the air. Diseases linked to it, such as mesothelioma and asbestosis, can appear many years later, so the aim is never to disturb it unknowingly.

Do you work in flats?

Yes. For shared areas, the managing agent or freeholder holds the asbestos information.

What happens

Unexpected materials mean we pause and discuss, before changing the plan. Nobody else needs to be in the work area, so children and pets should be kept elsewhere. We plan outdoor jobs in North End to finish before dark: that means by about 3:55pm in December, or about 9:20pm in June.

  1. Share photos, the postcode and any survey or test you have
  2. We identify the material and work out whether the job is licensed, notifiable or non-licensed
  3. We quote in writing, including the waste
  4. We set up, keep the material damp and take it out whole where we can
  5. We clean the area and send the consignment note

How to prepare

  • Keep the area clear of children and pets
  • Do not disturb the material before we get there
  • Warn neighbours if needed

Helpful guides

Materials, one by one

Insulating board and lagging

Work on sprayed coatings, and most work on lagging and asbestos insulating board, is licensed.

Bitumen and felt

Some old roof felts and bitumen products contain asbestos, which is usually well bound.

Looking after things afterwards

File the waste paperwork safely: it shows the asbestos was disposed of legally.

If asbestos stays in the building:

  • Clear the area around the work, without disturbing the asbestos
  • Tell neighbours if the work is close to their property
  • File the consignment note
  • Ensure pets and children are elsewhere

What to avoid

Do not let anyone remove asbestos without asking how the waste will be disposed of.

Deal with asbestos before the builders start.

Should you do it yourself?

Sanding, drilling, cutting and jet-washing are the worst things you can do to asbestos materials, so avoid them completely.

HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.

Duty holders and landlords in North End

If you manage or own a block in North End, the asbestos register for common parts should be kept up to date and shared with contractors, and condition checked regularly.

If your business premises in North End were built before 2000, you are likely to need an asbestos register and a management plan, and you must tell contractors what’s there.

  • Identify it first: we test or survey before planning removal
  • Work planned to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and HSE guidance
  • Everything in writing: quotes, reports, results and waste notes
  • Waste sealed and labelled, then taken to a permitted site
