  • A refurbishment and demolition survey needs the areas to be empty, so timing needs planning
  • Areas we cannot safely reach are listed in the report, and must be treated as containing asbestos until checked

Asbestos survey in Woolwich

An asbestos survey finds out whether a building contains asbestos, where it is, how much there is and what condition it’s in. We offer management, refurbishment and demolition, and pre-purchase surveys in Woolwich, and samples go to an accredited laboratory for analysis. Whether it’s buying a property built before 2000 and managing asbestos in workplaces and non-domestic premises, we deal with flues, boiler cupboard panels and water tanks and more.

For London properties like those in Woolwich, the scope matters most: a whole building, one flat, or just the rooms being refitted. We follow HSE guidance and the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, whatever the size of the job.

Common questions in Woolwich

Do older homes in Woolwich have asbestos?

Older homes can, if they date from before 2000. A sample test is the only reliable answer. Garage roofs, Artex, floor tiles, soffits and flues are typical examples.

Can you survey a school or hall near Woolwich?

Yes, working with whoever is responsible for the building. The duty holder should hold an asbestos register.

Do I get anything in writing afterwards?

A survey report, laboratory results or a waste consignment note, depending on the job.

Can you survey offices and warehouses?

We do: commercial, industrial and community buildings. Tell us about the building and what you need.

Do I need to be at home?

We need access to every area in the job, and to be available for questions.

Can I put asbestos in a skip?

No. Asbestos is hazardous waste and must go to a site that accepts it. We take it to a permitted site with paperwork.

Can you come if the asbestos is damaged?

Make the area safe first: close it off and do not clean it up yourself. Then get in touch and we will advise.

What should I do if I’ve disturbed asbestos?

Stop work, leave the area and don’t try to clean up. Then ask for advice; if you are worried about your health, speak to your GP.

Responsibilities for owners

Between tenancies is a good time to deal with asbestos, when rooms are empty and work can be done without disruption.

Community buildings count as non-domestic premises, so the duty to manage applies.

Doing it yourself?

Asbestos waste can’t go in household bins, recycling or skips. It has to go to a site that accepts it, and some councils accept small amounts from residents by arrangement.

Fragile roofs are a serious falls risk, quite apart from the asbestos, so stay off it.

How we work

If a material is damaged, we’ll say so before we leave, rather than waiting for the report. Nobody else needs to be in the work area, so children and pets should be kept elsewhere.

  1. Tell us about the building, its age and what you are planning
  2. We set out the survey type, the areas covered and the price in writing
  3. We inspect and sample the areas in scope
  4. The samples are analysed by an accredited laboratory
  5. You get the report, and we talk you through it

Before we arrive

  • Dig out previous surveys
  • Keep children and pets away on the day
  • Clear access to the area, loft or garage

What it might be made of

Pipe lagging

Old lagging is one of the higher-risk materials. Work on it is licensed.

Asbestos cement

Asbestos cement was used for garage and shed roofs, gutters, downpipes, flues, soffits and water tanks. The fibres are bound in cement, and breaking or cutting it releases them.

Your options compared

A building survey for a purchase isn’t the same as an asbestos survey. It may flag possible asbestos, but it doesn’t usually take samples, which is where a pre-purchase asbestos survey comes in. Access makes a big difference to cost, so tell us about access.

How we work in Woolwich

  • Samples analysed by an accredited laboratory
  • Clear advice on your options
  • Clear next steps
  • Domestic and commercial work

Take a look at how we price jobs and published price ranges.

Afterwards

If it finds asbestos that work would disturb, the report explains what needs removing before work starts, and what kind of work that is.

Staying safe afterwards:

  • Clear access to lofts, garages, cupboards and outbuildings
  • For flats, ask the managing agent for the asbestos register for the common parts
  • Have any old surveys or plans ready
  • Ask for the report in a format you can share with contractors

Don’ts

Be clear about the work you’re planning, so nothing in the work area is left out of scope.

Please don’t break off pieces for us to look at: we take samples with wetting and sealing to limit any release.

What it costs
