Asbestos testing near Woolwich

Materials we deal with

Cement sheets

Grey corrugated sheets on garages and sheds are a common request. Testing confirms whether it’s asbestos cement.

Textured coatings

Textured ceilings and walls are among the most common things people ask us to test. Older coatings can contain a small amount of asbestos.

How asbestos testing works in Woolwich

If you’ve already disturbed a material during DIY in Woolwich, stop and keep people away from it. A test will show whether it contains asbestos. Whether it’s textured ceilings before a renovation and floor tiles and black adhesive, we cover black adhesive, panels behind heaters and soffit boards.

In flats and conversions around Woolwich, testing is often about one ceiling, one floor or a boiler cupboard before a refit, where a test is all that is needed. Work is planned to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and HSE guidance, whatever the size of the job.

Woolwich questions

Do you work near Woolwich Dockyard station?

Yes, we cover Woolwich, including the streets around Woolwich Dockyard station.

Is asbestos common in Woolwich homes?

That depends on when it was built and altered: asbestos was used until the 1999 ban, so older homes and older alterations in Woolwich can contain it. Garage roofs, Artex, floor tiles, soffits and flues are typical examples.

What happens if the test is positive?

We’ll explain your options, which depend on the material, its condition and your plans: leaving it, covering it or removing it.

Do you need to see it before quoting?

Clear photos and measurements are often enough; otherwise we’ll arrange a visit.

What if the weather’s bad?

Indoor work is not affected. Outdoor removal may be postponed in strong wind or heavy rain, for safety.

Do you work on commercial premises?

We do, alongside homes. The duty holder should be able to share the asbestos register.

Does asbestos always have to come out?

No. Material in good condition that won’t be disturbed can often be left and managed. It should be recorded and checked.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes: homeowners, landlords, managing agents, businesses and contractors. Tell us about the property and what you need.

Responsibilities for owners

Landlords of single homes do not have the same duty to manage as non-domestic duty holders, but anyone working on the property still needs to know about asbestos.

Community buildings count as non-domestic premises, so whoever runs them has a duty to manage asbestos.

What happens

We wear suitable protective equipment and keep the work area clear, however small the job. If anything unexpected turns up, we stop and talk to you before carrying on.

  1. Describe the material and send a picture

Helpful guides

Should you do it yourself?

Sanding, drilling, cutting and jet-washing are the worst things you can do to asbestos materials.

HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.

What we deal with in Woolwich

Most exposure happens when someone disturbs a material without knowing it contains asbestos. Testing first avoids that.

Asbestos can be in plenty of places in buildings from before 2000. Typical situations are:

  • Corrugated roof sheets
  • Artex ceilings before plastering, sanding or drilling
  • Soffit boards
  • Floor tiles and black adhesive

If your home is one of the older properties in Woolwich, near Granada Cinema or elsewhere, get suspect materials tested before you start.

Questions to ask before booking

  • The survey type, as defined in HSG264
  • The report contents
  • The scope of the job, in writing
  • Which areas are covered, and which aren’t

What affects the price in Woolwich

The price of asbestos testing depends mainly on:

  • The quantity or area
  • Parking and access charges
  • Roof spaces and outbuildings in scope
  • The size and age of the building

How easy the material is to reach affects the price, so tell us about access.
