About our asbestos testing in Newdigate

If you’ve got a ceiling, floor or roof in Newdigate you’re not sure about, testing a sample settles the question. If it’s clear, work can go ahead normally; if not, you’ll know what precautions are needed. People often contact us about Artex ceilings before plastering, sanding or drilling and porch canopies, including textured ceilings, soffit boards and black adhesive.

Rural properties near Newdigate may have materials of very different ages, so testing each one is the only way to be sure. Every job ends with paperwork: a report, results or a consignment note, for your records.

Where asbestos turns up

Textured coatings, floor tiles, cement sheets and boards can all look the same with or without asbestos, so appearance and age are not enough.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting advice:

  • One-off checks in rented property
  • Tiles found under carpet
  • Results builders ask for before work
  • Boiler cupboard panels

For older homes anywhere in Newdigate, from near Church of St Peter outwards, get suspect materials tested before you start.

Questions to ask before booking

  • If the price includes VAT
  • Laboratory analysis by an accredited lab
  • What the report or result will contain
  • The scope of the job, in writing

Choosing an asbestos contractor

After the job

Each sample gets a written result, showing whether asbestos was found and the type.

Keeping things safe:

  • Keep the results for future work or a sale
  • Clear access to the area
  • Test everything you are worried about at once
  • Ask us if you are unsure whether you need a test or a survey

Avoid these

Until you have the result, don’t drill, sand, scrape or cut the material.

Keep everyone away from damaged material, and do not sweep or vacuum up debris.

Which option is right?

You can buy home testing kits, but you have to disturb the material yourself to use one. HSE advises that a competent person takes samples. There’s no one-size price, as every job differs. Our guides list published price ranges from other companies, with sources.

What you get

  • Homes, rented property and workplaces
  • London, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and beyond
  • Condition assessed for every material
  • Clear next steps

Take a look at our prices page or our cost guide.

Can I do it myself?

HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.

Power tools, sanding and jet-washing release the most fibres, so avoid them completely.

What happens

If we spot other materials that might contain asbestos, we’ll mention them, so you can decide whether to test them too. We will tell you when we have finished and what you will receive afterwards.

  1. Tell us what you’d like tested
  2. We confirm the number of samples and the price
  3. A surveyor visits and samples each material, sealing the sample points
  4. We send the samples to an accredited laboratory
  5. The written results come back to you, and we explain them

Getting ready

  • Let us know where we can park
  • Do not disturb the material before we get there

FAQs for Newdigate

How far is Newdigate from London?

We cover Newdigate, about 24 miles from central London.

Can you deal with asbestos on rural buildings in the Surrey Hills National Landscape?

Yes. The asbestos rules are the same in protected landscapes, but access to farm and rural buildings can take planning.

Can I take a sample myself?

Sampling is best left to a competent person, according to HSE, as it means disturbing the material. Ask us to take it.

What if my house is newer?

Asbestos was banned in 1999, so buildings built after 2000 shouldn’t contain it, although older materials can sometimes be reused or left in extensions.

Can you test the air for asbestos?

Air testing for clearance is done by an independent UKAS-accredited analyst. We will tell you whether you need it.

Do you cover Newdigate?

Yes. We cover Newdigate and the surrounding area as part of Surrey. Send us the postcode for a quote.

Can you help a business or landlord?

Yes: homeowners, landlords, managing agents, businesses and contractors. Tell us about the property and what you need.

My builder has found asbestos. What now?

Work there should pause and the area be kept clear. We’ll identify it and advise on removal.

  • Survey or test first when it isn’t clear what a material is
  • Done to the regulations: HSE guidance and CAR 2012
  • Written paperwork: reports, results and waste consignment notes
  • Waste sealed and labelled, then taken to a permitted site
