Asbestos testing in Northney
A test answers one question: is this material asbestos? We sample suspect materials in Northney and have them analysed by an accredited laboratory, so you have a written answer before any work starts. We often deal with soffit boards, flue pipes and garage roof sheets, and typical jobs are answers trades need before starting and tiles found under carpet.
Village homes in areas like Northney often mix old and newer materials, so each material needs its own test. Small jobs get the same care as big ones, with the same attention to the regulations.

For landlords, agents and businesses
Before contractors start, they need to know about any asbestos. HSE’s campaigns stress this point to building owners and trades alike.
If your business premises in Northney were built before 2000, you should have an asbestos register and management plan, and you must tell contractors what’s there.
Options to consider in Northney
Home testing kits are available, but you take the sample yourself, which means disturbing the material. HSE advises that a competent person takes samples. Every quote says whether VAT is included, so you can compare like with like.

Places near Northney
Northney: your questions answered
Is asbestos common in Northney homes?
That depends on when it was built and altered: asbestos was used until the 1999 ban, so older homes and older alterations in Northney can contain it. Garage roofs, Artex, floor tiles, soffits and flues are typical examples.
Do you cover Northney from London?
We cover Northney, about 60 miles from central London.
Do I get anything in writing afterwards?
It depends on what we do: a survey report, a laboratory result, or a consignment note for removed waste.
When will I get the result?
Timing depends on the lab. We will tell you the expected timing when we quote.
Is a home built after 2000 likely to contain asbestos?
Asbestos was banned in 1999, so buildings built after 2000 shouldn’t contain it, although older materials can sometimes be reused or left in extensions.
Can you come if the asbestos is damaged?
First, keep people away from the damaged material: shut the door if you can and do not sweep it up. Then get in touch and we’ll advise.
Should all asbestos be removed?
No. Material in good condition that won’t be disturbed can often be left and managed. It should be recorded and checked.
Will I get the price in writing?
Always: the quote is in writing and sets out what’s included, and whether VAT is included.

The scope of asbestos testing
It’s worth knowing what asbestos testing does and doesn’t cover:
- Testing does not look for anything else, so it is not a substitute for a survey before major work
- Clearance testing is a separate, independent job
- A result tells you what the material is, not how to remove it
If in doubt, ask: we will recommend a test, a survey or removal.
Common materials
- Roof felt
- Soffit boards
- Artex and textured ceilings
- Garage roof sheets
- Water tanks
- Bitumen adhesive
- Floor tiles
- Panels behind heaters
- Flue pipes
- Pipe lagging
Doing it yourself?
HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Licensed materials are strictly for licensed contractors.
Asbestos waste can’t go in household bins, recycling or skips. It has to go to a site that accepts it, and some councils accept small amounts from residents by arrangement.
After we have finished in Northney
The sample point is sealed when we take the sample, so the material is left safe in the meantime.
Looking after any asbestos that remains:
- Test everything you are worried about at once
- Let us know what you want to do next
- Ask us if you are unsure whether you need a test or a survey
- Clear access to the area
What to avoid
Leave the material alone until the result is back.
Keep everyone away from damaged material, and don’t try to clean it up.
- Nothing removed blind: unknown materials are tested first
- Done to the regulations: HSE guidance and CAR 2012
- Everything in writing: quotes, reports, results and waste notes
- Asbestos waste double-bagged or wrapped and taken to a permitted site
