Water tanks

Older cold water tanks in lofts were sometimes made from asbestos cement. They’re heavy, and often too big to fit back through the loft hatch in one piece, so removal needs planning. The tank is drained and disconnected by a plumber first.

Flue pipes

Asbestos cement flue pipes were used with boilers, warm air heaters and other appliances. If the appliance is still connected, a Gas Safe registered engineer must disconnect it before the flue is removed.

The method

Removing asbestos cement tanks and flues is usually non-licensed work under HSE guidance. The material is kept damp and removed whole or in as few pieces as possible, without power tools, then wrapped or bagged. See water tanks and flues.

Not sure what it is?

We can test a sample first. If it turns out to be a different material, such as insulating board, the work may be licensed.
