Our asbestos testing in PO36
Sampling is done carefully: we wet the area, take a small piece, bag it and seal the sample point. That is safer than breaking off a piece yourself. People often contact us about a material damaged during DIY and panels behind old heaters, including flue pipes, garage roof sheets and soffit boards.
Taking a sample is generally quick; the laboratory analysis takes longer.
- Tell us what the material is, where it is, and send a picture if you can
- We quote for the samples needed
- Each sample is taken carefully and sealed
- An accredited laboratory carries out the analysis
- We send the result and explain your options
Pricing in PO36

Asbestos testing across PO36
From Sandown, Shanklin and Lake to 16 villages and hamlets, we test materials in homes and workplaces across PO36. Artex, floor tiles and garage roofs come up most. Around 19 places in PO36 are close to the coast, where exposed sites can be windy, which affects outdoor roof work.
Sandown: Schools such as The Bay Church of England School should have an asbestos management plan, and staff can ask to see how it works. If the property is on or near the A3055 and A3056, tell us about parking, as stopping on main roads can be restricted.
How we price asbestos testing
Our quotes take into account:
- How many different materials need sampling
- The size of the job
- What the material is and its state
- How big the building is
Identifying asbestos early is cheaper than stopping work later, when everything has to stop.
Sending photos
When you send photos, these help most:
- Any damage, cracks or broken pieces
- The route in: gates, steps, stairs or the loft hatch
- Any labels or markings, if you can see them safely
- Street parking nearby
Include any existing survey or test when you ring 07833 053 749, or send the details through our contact page; it helps us quote accurately.
Good to know
What’s in and what’s out:
- A test only covers the materials sampled, so bigger work needs a survey
- Clearance air testing after licensed work is done by an independent UKAS-accredited analyst
- Photos cannot confirm asbestos; only a lab can
For businesses and landlords in PO36
The duty to manage applies to non-domestic premises and common parts, not to single private homes, but contractors still need to know about asbestos before they work.
Duty holders for workplaces and the shared parts of flats in PO36 must manage asbestos under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. That means finding it, assessing it, recording it and planning how to manage it.
Why people call us in PO36
Building products contained asbestos until the 1999 ban, so materials in homes and buildings across the Isle of Wight built or refurbished before 2000 can contain it.
Common situations in older properties include:
- One-off checks in rented property
- Textured ceilings before a renovation
- Corrugated roof sheets
- Boards and panels before a kitchen or bathroom refit
Looking after things afterwards
File the results with your house paperwork, as they’re useful when you sell or carry out more work.
- Tell us what work you are planning
- Not sure between a test and a survey? Ask
- Leave the material undisturbed until we have sampled it
- Tell us if there’s adhesive under tiles
Keep everyone away from damaged material, and don’t try to clean it up.
Get the result before work is booked, so you can plan properly.
PO36: your questions answered
Do I need more than one sample?
Normally one per material, with extra where the same material appears in different places. Photos help us suggest a number.
Is asbestos dangerous?
Asbestos is a hazard when its fibres get into the air. The related diseases often take decades to develop, so the aim is never to disturb it unknowingly.
Do you need to see it before quoting?
Photos are often enough to give a quote, though some need a visit first.
What happens if the test is positive?
A positive result tells you the type of asbestos found. From there, we’ll talk through leaving it, covering it or removing it.
What if the weather’s bad?
Indoor work isn’t affected. Outdoor removal may be postponed in strong wind or heavy rain, for safety.
How do I know if my property contains asbestos?
You cannot tell by eye. A sample analysed in a laboratory is the reliable way to find out, especially in buildings from before 2000.
My builder has found asbestos. What now?
Stop work in that area and keep people out, and the material needs identifying before work resumes.
- Survey or test first when it isn’t clear what a material is
- Work planned to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and HSE guidance
- Written paperwork: reports, results and waste consignment notes
- Waste sealed and labelled, then taken to a permitted site
