Asbestos removal and surveys in E6

We cover every part of the E6 postcode district, including East Ham, Plashet and Wallend. We survey, test and remove asbestos, with written paperwork.

Asbestos garage roof removal in E6: what to expect

Many garages built before 2000, in E6 and elsewhere, have corrugated asbestos cement roofs. We remove the sheets whole, damp and wrapped, and dispose of them at a permitted site, and give you the waste paperwork. Typical materials include ridge pieces, downpipes and bargeboards, and typical jobs are pieces of broken roof and old, cracked sheets.

Access is by ladders, towers or crawling boards, not the fragile sheets, because asbestos cement roofs are fragile.

  1. Tell us roughly how big the garage is and how we’d reach it
  2. We check the roof material first
  3. You get a written quote, and we agree a date that suits your new roof
  4. We wet the sheets, undo the fixings and lower each sheet whole
  5. We take the wrapped sheets away and send the consignment note

Garage roofs across E6

Garages across E6, from Plaistow, Canning Town and Barking to 3 villages and hamlets, often have corrugated cement roofs from before 2000. Town garages are often in blocks, village ones among outbuildings.

East Ham: Around Ripple Nature Reserve, a garage may share a plot with sheds and stores, so it can make sense to do them at once. Across East Ham, garages and outbuildings may date from before 2000. We plan garage roof jobs in East Ham for daylight: in late December it’s dark by about 3:50pm, in June not until about 9:20pm.

DIY and asbestos

HSE’s advice to the public is not to try to repair or remove asbestos yourself. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings and most insulating board must only be dealt with by an HSE-licensed contractor.

With a professional job, you get a record: results, a report or a consignment note, which buyers and builders may ask for.

Materials, one by one

Roof felt

We’ll tell you if it needs testing.

Gutters and downpipes

We take them down in whole lengths.

What it costs

The cost depends on:

  • Whether the work is non-licensed, notifiable or licensed
  • Travel and parking
  • How many samples are needed
  • Access: height, lofts, steps and space

A price that looks too good to be true often is: controls, protective equipment, laboratory fees and legal disposal all cost money.

Photos that help

When you send photos, these help most:

  • A rough size or measurement
  • A picture of the whole area
  • Damaged areas
  • The route in: gates, steps, stairs or the loft hatch

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos and the postcode: call 07833 053 749 or use our quote form.

After the job

If you are converting the garage, tell your builder the roof has been removed and show them the paperwork.

  • Empty the garage, but leave the roof alone
  • Measure or estimate the size of the roof
  • Let neighbours know beforehand
  • Send photos of the whole garage and the access

Never cut or break the sheets.

Keep weight off the roof.

Duty holders and landlords in E6

Void periods are a good time for asbestos work, when rooms are empty and work can be done without disruption.

The duty to manage applies to non-domestic premises and common parts, not to single private homes, but contractors still need to know about asbestos before they work.

E6 questions

Which asbestos work needs a licence?

Licensed work is work on the materials most likely to release fibres: lagging, sprayed coatings and most asbestos insulating board. It needs a contractor with an HSE licence.

Do you take down the walls too?

Cement wall panels can be removed in the same way as the roof sheets. Brickwork is a builder’s job.

Do you need to see it before quoting?

Often we can quote from clear photos and a description; if not, we’ll arrange to see it.

How do I know if my garage roof is asbestos?

If it’s grey corrugated sheeting on a garage built before 2000, it may be, but you cannot be sure by looking. We can test a sample.

What should I do if I’ve disturbed asbestos?

Get everyone out of the area and keep it closed. Do not try to clean up the debris yourself, then contact a professional; your GP can advise if you are worried about your health.

Can asbestos go in my bin?

Never: it’s hazardous waste. When we remove it, it’s taken to a permitted site with a consignment note.

Does asbestos always have to come out?

Not always. Sound material that will not be touched can often stay, as long as it’s recorded.

  • Survey or test first when it isn’t clear what a material is
  • Planned to HSE guidance and the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
  • Everything in writing: quotes, reports, results and waste notes
  • Asbestos waste double-bagged or wrapped and taken to a permitted site
